I am Hannah Marie Herrera

I am Hannah Marie Herrera
I am from the mists of eternity and the divine spirit of creation
I am from a line of wise men and courageous women
I am from as far as Romania and as close as Pecos New Mexico
I am Hannah Marie Herrera

I remember green chili in the morning, afternoon, and night
I remember long talks with family in the evening beneath a New Mexico sunset
I remember the hot springs of Montezuma and the hikes of Gallenas Canyon
I remember walking along the street of Santa Fe, New Mexico
Losing myself in the architecture and culture of hundreds of years ago

I wonder if I will ever love a land the way I love my home land-
New Mexico
I hyear my culture always calling me home to the place that I love
I see my grandparetns in their small Pecos home
I see adobe,  cactus, and arroyos
I want to be small again, running along the acres of land that made up my backyard

I pretend that I am there in childhood again, yound and naive
I feel as though time has slipped like sand through my fingers
I desperately grasp at what has molded my soul, but the sand continues to fall
I touch the memories fondly in dreams, recalling the many precious moments
I worry that one day all these things will slip through my fingers completely
I am still that child, though this body continues to grow old

I understand why someone would die for their land, their culture, their family
I say I will someday leave this place, but it will forever enchant me
I dream that one day I will be one of the strong women taht make up my family
That one day those that come after me will remember that
I am part of where they come from
I am Hannah Marie Herrera
